Youth In Blues Project

What is the Youth In Blues Project?

This project offers the youth somewhere to show their talent, and in the end to perpetuate blues. MBAS has promoted quite a few youth bands/acts into the festival arena.

What does the Project offer Youth?

It offers stage experience, confidence in playing to audiences, and the opportunity of obtaining music teachers, as well as (if they are good enough) playing festivals and paying gigs.

Youth In Blues - Winners for 2009

MBAS Youth in Blues Project WINNER
Well folks, Youth in Blues Project has come to an end.
Saturday 12th Sep, was our final session and with 7 bands and a venue crammed with people, it went off superbly, a huge thank you to the 5 judges who had the hard task of judging for a winning band were, Diana Wolfe (Wolfe Gang), Dave Philpots (The Detonators), Dave Hogan (Dave Hogan’s Meltdown), John Durr (Black Market Music) & Robert Dillon (RBD Productions).

The 7 bands were: The Loop, Shoe Shine, The 61 Chain Gang, Deja Voodoo, Janus Word, Rags n’ Old Iron and 6 in 1. I have to say that I am extremely proud of each and every one of the musicians who participated in the MBAS Youth in Blues Project 2009, the standard is set right here, these youth are the future of our blues industry, and what a good future it has!

The awards were handed out to quite a few of the participants for their hard work etc and the over-all winner is “DEJA VOODOO” this band will be going off to perform in 2 festivals as did “The Crawling King Snakes” in 2008, the front man in Deja Voodoo (Wil Gardner) is the younger brother of George Gardner of The Crawling King Snakes, must run in the family!

Deja Voodoo are made up of Wil Gardner on vocals/guitar, James Horne on harp, Dylan Canham on bass and Marty Richmond on drums, this band’s ages range from 16-17yrs and it is totally beyond me how they get so talented so young..

If you missed out on this year’s sessions and you are a musician under 25yrs, we will be holding the Youth in Blues Project again in 2010.

Sponsors: PBSfm, Drum Power, Way Out West Roots Club, Smokin’ Sam of Synergy Blue and Web 101, Warren Hall’s estate, Flat Out Car & Truck Sales, Bernies Music, Sonia Meggs.

Youth In Blues - Winners for 2008

Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society's 'youth in blues' program update.
What a fantastic showcase we had last Sunday, lots of people came down to the British Crown to see which of our Youth bands were in the running for the fantastic prizes we had to offer, there were 7 sets of great blues, some a little shaky but we are very proud of them all, the band which won the festival work is so far known only as Act 4 (must get them a name) and were comprised of Torren Dove (bass), George Gardner (voc/guit), Alex Palmer(voc/guit), Owen Hughes(drums), Michael Connell(harp), these 5 winners will represent MBAS at the Wangaratta Festival on the weekend of 31st Oct to 2nd November 2008 www.wangaratta-jazz.org.au , and also at the Australian Blues Festival (Goulburn) early next year www.australianbluesfestival.com.au.

MBAS would like to thank the many people who attended the showcase and to the fine set of judges, John Durr (Black Market Music), Robert Dillon (RBD Productions), Andrea Marr (Andrea Marr Band), Greg Dodd (guitarist-Andrea Marr Band). We would also like to thank Warren Hall for his inspiration and dedication to this project, his name will live on in an award called the “Warren Hall Award” for years to come.

Gavin of the British Crown has been so very supportive of everything the MBAS does specially the Youth in Blues project, thank you Gavin!

Of course the MBAS will keep this project as an annual or bi-annual event, depending on the interest of the youth.

Congratulations to all the people who supported this project, without you, it would not have happened.

Sonia Meggs
